Our Philosophy

                                On Our Way of Teaching...

We feel the key to opening ourselves to good permaculture skills is the practice of presence and observation.  We will practice these skills diligently in a variety of arts & exercises.

We infuse our courses with games and literature, visual and performing arts to stimulate learning and enhance achievement.

We believe how we do anything is how we do everything.  Permaculture is not only about how we tend our plants but how we are in the world.  It is a way of being, not a thing we are doing.

We are not dualistic, that is, not all things are black or white.  We embrace the grey.  All ways are invited in.  We balance research-based scientific knowledge with spiritual/ energetic ways and methods, and everything in-between.

We feel everyone should have the opportunity to develop skills in resiliance and self-reliance.

On Humanity...

We honor the wisdoms of ancient traditions and folkways of many peoples.

We honor common sense, and the deepest values within every human being.

We honor the inner wisdom and intuition of every human being.

We are always working towards answering the question, What is enough?

                       on Nature...

Reflection of Portsmouth, jo Russavage, 2010
Biodiversity is the engine of the planet, and humans are a part of that biodiversity, in equal part to any other species.  We strive to overcome humanity’s disconnect from nature.

We believe in being in harmony with nature.  We cooperate with nature, not try to subdue her.

We take nature on nature’s terms.  We experience nature in the moment.

We approach permaculture with our whole being – mind-body-spirit.  Anything less is less effective.

We focus on the local – our sense of place, and our local expertise and wisdom.
